Today while we were out walking a guy in a van stopped next to us to ask for directions. Before he could ask Andre said "Don't have a clue." Because we just got here and really only know the way to the shops in town and home again.
So not far from us he stopped a guy on a bicycle coming towards us. They talked for a while and then he drove on. When we got to the guy on the bike -an elderly man- he said, "I just spoke to someone who could hardly speak any English!" He obviously had never come across such a person and could not believe it!
We didn't know WHAT to say. We just smiled thinking, we just came from a country where many people didn't speak much English. Try leaving your English speaking country and see what happens! We didn't say this of course. Just smiled and shook our heads and said good bye to the friendly (English) man on the bicycle.
Isn't it funny, when you come across people who are still astounded by those who don't speak their language? As an expat, we get over that fairly quickly I think :-)
