I've heard about Flammeküche and thought I can't leave Switzerland without trying this. So on Wednesday Andre met me for lunch in Zürich and we went to Café Balthazar where we've seen this on the menu before.
Translated it literally means "flaming kitchen". It's a specialty of the Alsace region in France. I have also heard it being called Flammkuchen.
It's like a pizza, but with a very thin base, crispy around the edges. Then instead of a tomato base it has crème fraiche. I had the classic one with onions and bacon bits. It was perfect. André had his with chorizo and olives.
Maybe some day I will try to make it myself. I've already found a recipe here.
On a couple of previous visits to Café Balthazar, this is what we had:
Apfelstrudel with Vanillasoße (thin custard) and hot chocolate!
