EEA family permit application

So yesterday we went to hand in Andre's application for an EEA family permit. I can't remember if I wrote about this right when I started this blog. No I actually think we already knew we were coming to Switzerland when I started this. Literally a few hours before we paid an agency a year ago to handle our UK application, we got the news that Andre's Switzerland permit was approved. So we cancelled the UK arrangements and came here instead.

But as you know, we're now leaving and finally will be going to the UK. Hopefully.

Because I have an EU passport Andre can apply for an EEA (European Economic Area) family permit and can then stay there as long as I'm there. (Who's the trailing spouse now! haha!)

An EEA family permit is free and it can't really be refused. Unless of course you're a terrorist or have a criminal record or something, none of which Andre has of course. But to be safe we had a lawyer help us with the paper work and make sure we have everything we need for our application. We didn't want to get something wrong or miss anything and then not get it.

But if you ever need to apply for this particular permit, you really don't need to pay anyone to help you. You can ask me what you need to do, I won't charge you! We had this huge folder with so much stuff that the lawyer said we needed. The lady at the visa application centre wasn't interested in half of it. The lawyer told us to have photos of us to prove that we've known each other for long, that we live together, letters from friends and family saying we are a happily married couple etc etc. I guess it's better to rather have more than less in this case. And we'll keep it all together in the folder. Andre is only getting entry clearance now. He will have to apply for a residence permit or something like that within 6 months when we get there.

So we're tracking the process online. Our application has ben sent to Geneva and has arrived there. It will take minimum 5 working days, but could of course take a bit longer. We're hoping for the minimum!

Hold thumbs!

  1. Ooo... EU passport holder trumps the breadwinner. OK, you work as well. But Andre is the bigger bread winner, no? :)

Sounds like things will go smoothly.

  6. Hello Anneliese, I'm Jonathan and I'm getting married in July. I'm a Danish citizen and my fiancee is American, so we're going down the route of getting an EEA Family Permit so that she can live here with me. I know that this is out of the blue, but would you be able to help me out by telling me what we need to do to get this Family Permit? Any help you could give would be great.

    Jonathan

  9. Hello Annelie,
We're in a similar situation; I'm an EU citizen, my wife is Russian. We've been married for about 4 years (we have been living in Switz until now) and have a daughter together (she's an EU citizen as well).
We're about to apply for the EEA Family Permit and I was wondering: what paperwork did you end up having to provide to the UK authorities ?
I'd really appreciate any advice you could give.

  11. Hello Anneliese,
I am an EU citizen and my husband is South African. We have been married for a year and half now and we were hoping to make a life in Slovakia, which is the country where i live. Unfortunately he couldn't find a job here because he doesn't speak Slovak and when i got sick with cancer we decided that he has to go back to South Africa so that he can get a job, because i wasn't able to provide for us. I am fine now and the treatment is almost over. My husband has been offered a job in UK with BT so we would like to apply for EEA family permit. I am an english teacher at grammar school and i hope to find a job in UK too. However we've been through a lot lately and our finances have suffered greatly. Do you think that we stand a chance of getting the permit for him? Did they ask for proof of financial funding? I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me.

  15. Please I would be grateful if anyone could help.
I am a British citizen currently living with my partner of 2 years plus in the United States.
I am currently on the deportation list for my overstay in 2009.
I have until march 2013 to voluntary take myself and my fiancée, soon to be wife and two children 8 and 6 back to the uk.
My fiancée and I have been in our relationship for two years, with steady bank account, hundreds of family photos, phone records, email contact etc etc.
We would like to get married in the next few weeks and then apply for a family permit.
I have accommodation set up with my family back home and we will have savings. Also I will be able to go back into my profession easily.
Is this possible for us, my fiancée is an American citizen and has a clean background, can anyone help in giving us the hope and facts that this is an option.

If anyone can help, I'd be so grateful
    Thank you
