Feeding Isabella: Books on weaning your baby

The very first meal

Isabella had her first taste of solids (or semi-solids) the day before she turned 5 months. If I had to do it over I think I would wait until she's 6 months. Eating has made no difference yet on her sleep.* She's only now after two months starting to eat proper bigger portions. While I feel there's probably nothing wrong with starting earlier even, the health visitor was absolutely right in the end telling me it's not going to make a difference with the small amounts of fruit and veg only she was eating until recently. And also once I started I felt I couldn't go back and skip a solid meal during the day in case she's now used to it and expecting it so I had to keep it up. (Such a worrier when it comes to her!) I sometimes struggled fitting her meals in between bottles and naps. I felt like it didn't leave us much time for anything else, but it's getting better now.

She loves feeding herself and of course
dropping spoons to the floor...

Anyway, I was going to explain the way we feed her, or the way I do actually. Andre doesn't like mess and he doesn't like touching and definitely not tasting her food!

I really liked the idea of baby-led weaning as explained in this book:

The good points behind this method is that the baby learns to feed herself, she eats whatever you're eating and you don't have to sit and feed her so can enjoy your own meal. Or that is the idea. It creates quite a mess and you do end up having to pick up food off her lap, chair and the floor to hand back to her if it's still safe to eat, but you can manage a few bites yourself in between! It's also very good for hand-eye/ mouth co-ordination and fine-motor skills as they learn to pick up food of different sizes and textures, learning how to handle slippery bananas and small peas and how to eventually get it out their fists and into their mouths. But they don't end up eating very much at all in the beginning.

Crunchy carrot relief for teething!

We both had couscous salad for lunch.
Experiencing new textures.

We decided to do a bit of both, combining purees with finger foods. So I usually try to give Isabella something to feed herself, like half a banana, tomato wedges which she really likes, carrot sticks, cheese, or other fruit or veg slices, bread fingers with butter or cream cheese or anything else I can find in the fridge which she can hold.

She has recently discovered that she can bite bits off and she doesn't like the feeling of a chunk of food in her mouth at all! Her tongue is learning what to do with it so it's good for her, but she's now a bit wary of feeding herself sometimes.

She helped herself to the crust while she was
sitting on the kitchen counter!

Burgers and chips! (oven baked of course)

Her absolute favourite is yoghurt and fruit puree. Or just fruit puree on it's own. It's like chocolate to her I think! You'd think she's had enough to eat, but she's always got space for 'pudding'!

Sometimes eating with a spoon just takes too
long so she takes matters in her own hands and
decides to drink her yoghurt!

A slice of mango after yoghurt and berry puree.

Our next step is to get her used to having her purees more chunky and not as smooth as she likes them at the moment.

*Update: (I started writing this more than a week ago!) After advise from our health visitor we have now reduced her bottles down to only 3 milk feeds a day and she is now eating more solids. She wolfs down her purees and has a late morning and late afternoon snack, although it's usually just finger foods and not much of that makes it to her tummy yet, compared to when I feed her. AND... she's slept through the night for the past three nights!! Yay! Even slept until 7 this morning (usually she wakes around 6). I love giving her a bottle and will miss it when she stops having them, but it does make life easier having less bottles a day to fit in with her meals and naps and also less to wash and carry around when we're out.

Little miss Independent wants to do it all
herself already. Giving her one spoon to hold
is not enough, she wants both!

Other books I've found helpful:

Super Baby Food which is a really, really complete guide. It will tell you everything. How to cook an egg (I looked it up the other day to be sure I had it cooked through for Isabella!) to how to safely freeze baby food and loads of ideas on everything. It also covers hygiene in the kitchen, how to choose the best fruit and veg when shopping, how best to store food, has a section on nutrition and then of course the super baby porridge which I will try and give a go soon as I'm getting bored with the store bought baby cereals. I actually need to read this book again. You can't remember half of it there's so much information!

Feeding Sense which is part of the South African Baby Sense series. This book is much more simplified compared to the one above, but was also very helpful as you can feel quite overwhelmed by all the new information on feeding your baby and this one just tells you straight what, when and how much. I still refer back to this one from time to time too.

Sensory class.

I also had a look at the Baby-Led Weaning Cookbook which has some nice simple recipes for the whole family but liked the River Cottage Baby and Toddler Cookbook even more. I just borrowed them from the library, but we seem to end up cooking more without recipe books most nights.

And we have water after every meal or snack.

Eating is just so much fun!!

A Portrait a Week: 23/52

For a change I'm organised and posting Isabella's portrait of the week early as we're going away on a little holiday.

She loves standing up. If she's ever a bit grumpy and you let her stand, she's instantly happier. And getting more and more braver, letting go with one hand. I love seeing how her balance is improving. We're still waiting for the crawling stage so she needs to hold off with the walking for a bit still!

A Portrait a Week: 22/52

We had a lovely sunny weekend after more than a week of rain and grey skies. Saturday we spent with friends at a church fair. Isabella loved every minute of it there. She never once complained. She loved looking at all the people, enjoyed the loud music (and even had a quick nap when we got there with the loud music playing!), she went on the swings and generally just enjoyed standing on the grass with her bare feet laughing.

Sunday was spent in our back garden. Andre did a lot of gardening while I did the entertaining of the little one. Also went for a quick walk in the afternoon to the park where Isabella had another go on the swings and even down the slide, with Andre holding her all the way down of course.

We tried getting a family photo of the three of us but Isabella can't keep her hands off any piece of technology. Camera, phone, remote- she's got to have it! (Wonder where she gets that from...)

And finally, long awaited photos of the toothies! The first two are now well and truly out and visible, although still small. And very very sharp. She managed to draw blood, gnawing my finger this weekend!

*All the good photos courtesy of Andre. (The average ones are me with the iphone!)

A Portrait a Week: 21/52

Isabella turned 7 months this past week!

A few of her firsts over the past month has been getting her first tooth, rolling from her back to her tummy (although we missed it the first time she did it, twice!) and her first visit to the beach (which didn't go so well!). She's also said 'pappa' for the first time, Afrikaans for daddy. She whispered it over and over in our bed one morning but haven't clearly said it again since. She's also not said 'mamma' much since she first said it 2 months ago. She still says 'dada' a lot. We're so blessed to have such a happy, healthy baby girl.

Beach Day in Bournemouth

It was so lovely and warm last weekend. Really summery. The last few days it's been back to the usual grey and wet weather over here. But so last weekend we decided to take a drive down to the beach. We went to Bournemouth which is just over an hour's drive or so. We were very excited to take Isabella on her first outing to the beach.

She was very good on the drive there, sleeping most of the way. We had a quick nappy change in the back of the car once we parked and then we were ready for the beach. We walked down the beach until we found a quieter spot. We were there just after 9am and it was quite busy already. On the way to finding our quieter spot on the beach we grabbed a parasol for hire. Glad we did or we wouldn't have been able to stay long at all as it was quite hot.

Still smiling after we had just arrived.

We set up our blanket and put Isabella down with her feet in the sand. She was not impressed at all. She started crying but stopped when we let her sit on the blanket. (Later she took an accidental dive forward into the sand which really got her upset!)

We really wanted her to feel the water. Andre carried her down to the water's edge but she just kept complaining, clearly not happy with all these new experiences. In the end she never did get to feel the sea water. I tried distracting her with shells, but nothing helped. Back in the shade she had her bottle and a while later her lunch and then she was ready for her lunch time nap so she started to scream. And scream and scream. We decided we'll take turns to walk her along the beach in her pram so she could sleep as she usually sleeps well that way. Well she screamed for at least 20min before falling asleep. We didn't stay on the beach much longer after her short nap. I think it was all just too much for her and she's not used to the hot weather yet.

We'll have to try again another time but in the mean time we're getting her used to different textures outside like grass and trying to get her to stand barefoot in the soil in our garden. I'm sure pretty soon she'll be getting very muddy in the garden, but at the moment she's not interested.

At least I had a very peaceful half hour lying on the beach while it was Andre's turn to walk with her.

A Portrait a Week: 20/52

This weeks' portrait

The weather has been amazing this weekend. It's finally starting to feel like real summer over here. We even went to the beach yesterday and I'll try and post pictures of that this week. Isabella doesn't allow me much time on the computer. I guess I could put her in front of the tv and get more done, but she doesn't learn anything by doing that, so instead I tend to spend most of my time entertaining her. Maybe I'm spoiling her that way, but oh well, I feel she needs my attention at the moment. I've even cut back spending time on facebook as it was wasting so so much of my time and she's much more important.

Today was spent at home mostly in the garden and we went for a walk in the forest here by our house this afternoon. Isabella really enjoyed the walk. Well, the first half of the walk until she fell asleep. She was in the carrier on Andre's back. Andre's been trying to get her used to being in the garden. She's not used to being barefoot and feeling different textures under her feet I guess. She will only just tolerate the feel of the grass if we distract her, but she can't stand having her feet touch sand/ soil. Andre has been carrying her around the garden and letting her touch leaves, bark of trees etc. And later today I carried her over to where Andre was weeding and she tried to get down from me so I put her down on the grass and she grabbed some of the weeds he was pulling out. That was a big step for her!!

We love those little toes!

Oh and she met our part-time cat* for the first time this weekend. No photos of that this time, but I can tell you she was not sure about this creature at all. Usually she grabs everything and anything these days to explore. I sat Isabella on my lap and as the cat is very friendly she came over to us eagerly for attention. Isabella stuck her hand out, then pulled it back, stuck it out again and pulled back again a few times before she took the plunge and grabbed a handful of fur from between the cat's ears and started crying. I managed to calm Isabella and the cat didn't seem bothered by its slight hair loss and swished her tail near Isabella which really set Isabella off so we ended that visit. Another try this afternoon and Isabella recognised the furry creature right away and started crying!

So lots of new things for our baby girl to get used to this summer!

Now put that camera away!

*If you've not met our part-time cat on the blog yet, you can read about her here, here and here.

A Portrait a Week: 19/52

Isabella is already a girl in love with her own reflection in the mirror!
Here's also a little video clip of her kissing herself in the mirror.
